Definition

The present continuous or present progressive is used to describe an action that is happening at this very moment.

Example: 

Estoy leyendo sobre el presente continuo. / I am reading about the present continuous.

Formation

AFIRMATIVE: subject + verb "estar" in present simple + verb in gerund
Mi amiga está estudiando para su examen de inglés. My friend is studying for her English test.
Vosotros estáis visitando Londres. You guys are visiting London.
Nosotros estamos viendo una película We are watching a movie.
NEGATIVE: subject + NO + verb "estar" in present simple + verb in gerund
Mi amiga no está estudiando para su examen de inglés. My friend is not studying for her English test.
Vosotros no estáis visitando Londres. You guys are not visiting London.
Nosotros no estamos viendo una película We are not watching a movie.

Gerund of verbs ending in -ar 

In order to find the gerund of these verbs. We will need to take get rid of the final -ar and add -ando as an ending.

Examples:
Hablar / to speak Hablando / speaking
Amar / to love Amando / loving
Tomar / to take Tomando / taking
Ahorrar / to save Ahorrando / saving
Luchar / to fight Luchando / fighting

 

Gerund of verbs ending in -er and -ir

In order to find the gerund of these verbs. We will need to take get rid of the final -er or -ir and add -iendo as an ending.

Examples:
Comer / to eat Comiendo / eating
Beber / to drink Bebiendo / drinking
Ver / to watch Viendo / watching
Vivir / to live Viviendo / living
Abrir / to open Abriendo / opening
